3 Tips For Improving Iron Mountain Kids’ Attention Spans

Wednesday, January 15th, 2014

Dickinson County immunization schedule

Hello Michigan parents! Today in the Iron Mountain Children’s Health Blog, we are going to look at various ways to lengthen kids’ attention spans. An increased attention span can improve learning ability as well as behavior and is an important aspect of kids health in Dickinson County.

1. Find an activity that will hold their attention. This might mean that you need to experiment with different types of toys and crafts. One child might enjoy building blocks while another may become engrossed in an art project. There are many craft and hobby stores in the Menominee County, Iron County, and Dickinson County area where parents can get great ideas.

2. Recorded stories are a wonderful resource for increasing attention spans. Have your child lie on the floor and close their eyes, then play a recorded story. When it’s finished, have your child retell the story to you. Local Iron Mountain libraries are perfect for finding recorded books and stories. Or you can download audio books for your iPad or other electronic reader.

3. Make sure that your child is using age-appropriate toys, crafts, and media. Age recommendations can be very helpful when deciding what activities will effectively engage your child.

Remember that it’s natural for different children to have varying attention spans, but the attention span of all kids should improve with age.

I’m June Rittenhouse and I am passionate about helping Michigan parents raise healthy and happy kids. I try to keep apprised on the latest in proper nutrition, childhood obesity, and immunizations. I am the owner of my own Iron Mountain home business that promotes Variety Pak. 3 Easy Ways For Iron Mountain Kids to Get More Antioxidants

Friday, November 29th, 2013

Dickinson County kids shot schedule

Because antioxidants are associated with cell damage and cell death, parents in the Dickinson County, Iron County, and Menominee County area often mistakenly assume that antioxidants are only important for adults and the elderly, those with more visible cell death and damage. But that simply isn’t the case. Everyone needs antioxidants for their health, even kids.

Antioxidants work their magic by protecting cells from free radicals. Free radicals are a by-product of the normal metabolic processes that take place in everyone’s bodies (even kids!) all the time. Free radicals may also occur from pollutants, such as cigarette smoke, or when the body breaks down certain medicines.

Free radicals damage cells through oxidation. You might remember from chemistry class that this is the same process that causes an apple slice to turn brown. During oxidation in the cells, DNA can be damaged and changed, which can create the beginnings of disease. A chain reaction of damage can also occur with one damaged molecule becomes a free radical itself and then damages another, and so on.

Now that you know their importance, here are 3 great ways to get more antioxidants into your kids’ diets.

1. Get more veggies on their plates at dinner time and in their lunch boxes

2. Make fruit the snack of choice for your family

3. When buying processed snacks, choose those fortified with antioxidants.

3 Critical Toy Safety Rules For Iron Mountain Parents

Wednesday, November 13th, 2013

Iron Mountain childrens vitamins

Between holidays and birthdays, there are plenty of opportunities for gift giving in the Iron Mountain area, so parents are often on the lookout for toys to give at the next big event. Toys can promote children’s health by stimulating the mind, encouraging imagination, or by getting kids moving around and exercising. But whatever toy you choose, make sure it is safe.

Next time you are browsing the toy aisle of your favorite Dickinson County, Iron County, or Menominee County department store, here are a few safety tips to keep in mind.

1. Be sure that you purchase toys that suit the child’s age and abilities. Buying a toy that is meant for older children is a possible safety hazard and should always be avoided.

2. Once you’ve chosen an age-appropriate toy, read all of the enclosed instructions before allowing your kids to play with it.

3. This can be difficult when you have children of differing ages, but you should always make sure that older kids play with toys containing small parts away from younger children, and never allow them to leave the game pieces unattended.

And, speaking of gifts, remember that ribbons and strings should be taken away immediately after a gift or toy is unwrapped.

Music is Magic for Iron Mountain Kids

Wednesday, November 13th, 2013

Dickinson County immunization schedule

Parents in and around Iron Mountain know that healthy kids need proper nutrition, lots of exercise, and well-rounded lives. It’s also safe to say that for all children, a well-rounded life should include music in one form or another.

Studies have shown that music does so much more than simply entertain!

Did you know that children who are involved in some kind of musical training during school perform better in math and science? They also develop better coordination, do better in reading, concentrating, and goal setting. Studies show that students who are involved in a music education program also perform better on their SATs, and are more likely to attend college.

While it’s ideal for Menominee County, Iron County, and Dickinson County parents to start their kids young, it is never too late to learn a musical instrument. Music stores in the Iron Mountain area will have great advice on age-appropriate music lessons and teachers for your curious child.

But lessons aren’t the only way! Keep an eye out in the Iron Mountain community for musical events such as church, school, and community performance programs. Check with Menominee County, Iron County, and Dickinson County libraries, websites, and community centers for more information.

Keep up the good work, Iron Mountain parents! Your children are lucky to have you to help them stay safe, healthy, and happy!

Old-School Snacks For Iron Mountain Kids

Tuesday, October 29th, 2013

Less Meat, More Plants For Healthier Dickinson County Kids

What does it take to make a healthy snack? The aisles at every Dickinson County, Iron County, and Menominee County grocery store are lined with packages that claim to be healthy and to contain the newest, most exciting vitamin or mineral. But is that really what makes a snack healthy?

Chances are that the answer is no. A lot of the foods that make healthy snacks are not the ones that you find packaged in the middle of the supermarket. Rather, they are what we would consider plain old food.

Plain old food has the advantage of being unprocessed and free of chemicals and preservatives. So, let’s take a look at these seemingly boring snack ingredients.

Cheese is a real protein powerhouse for your kids, so a little goes a long way. For a fun twist, try using cookie cutters to make shapes that your kids will love to gobble up!

Peanut butter and childhood go together like, well, peanut butter and jelly. Ants on a log, peanut butter spread on celery with raisins is always a fun treat. If your child has peanut allergies, you can always substitute almond butter in most recipes.

Low-fat yogurt is probably a favorite of your child’s already, but this versatile source of calcium has plenty of tricks up its sleeves. Try adding berries, or something crunchy like granola or whole-grain cereal. And, in the hot summer months, a yogurt pop can really hit the spot.

The humble egg isn’t just for breakfast anymore. Hard-boiled eggs kept in the fridge might be one of the most convenient ways to enjoy this high-protein snack.

As you can see, the secret to children’s nutrition might just be that there is no secret at all. Find real food, make it into a snack, and ignore the claims made by processed, pre-packaged food.

How Does Nature Make Dickinson County Kids Happier?

Tuesday, October 1st, 2013

Dickinson County kids shot schedule

Hello Iron Mountain parents! Welcome the the Iron Mountain Kid’s Health Blog. I’m sure most of you know how important it is for your kids health to spend time outdoors each and every day. But it may be even more important than you think.

Just like proper nutrition, immunizations, and vitamins, getting outside is essential for your child’s health.

One reason if for the natural light of the outdoors. This natural light keeps kids alert and healthy. Also, exposure to this light in the morning has a way of setting children’s internal clocks to promote better sleep and earlier bedtimes. (And what Menominee County parent doesn’t want earlier bedtimes?!) Another reason is that nature soothes and comforts children in safe, healthy ways. Studies have shown that children have better ability to focus with increased time outdoors. This will translate to more productive learning time as well as more tranquility in the home. Lastly, outdoor exercise is superior to indoor exercise because it promotes more physically vigorous play like jumping, running, and tumbling. These are all of the things that Iron County area parents are always telling their kids to stop doing in the living room!

Arrange your family’s schedule so that your children have time to explore the Iron Mountain outdoors, and everyone will be better for it!

4 Things Your Iron Mountain Pediatrician Wants You To Know

Tuesday, August 20th, 2013

Dickinson County Kids Vitamins

The health of their children is a top priority for parents in the Dickinson County, Iron County, and Menominee County areas, and that’s why having a good relationship with your child’s pediatrician is important. From well-child check-ups to children’s immunizations to flu shots, these healthcare providers are there when parents need them.

Today in the Iron Mountain Children’s Health Blog, we want to give you a look into some of the issues facing pediatricians, especially those issues that they may have difficulty discussing with parents.

1. A cold is a cold is a cold, even if they call it something different. There are lots of names for the common cold, like “viral rhinosinusitis” or “purulent rhinitis”. They might sound fancy, but if your kids has it, it really just means they have a cold. Many pediatricians use these terms so parents don’t feel like their being sent away from the office with an overly-simple diagnosis.

2. Old wives’ tales and internet health sites are no substitutes for professional medical advice! There are many rumors that have no scientific basis, but some patients insist on bringing their child in because an older member of the family noticed something (think green snot or ear tugging). Also, while the internet is filled with great information, it is also teeming with sensationalized and nonscientific sites that can be downright dangerous. Pediatricians just want parents to be safe and well-informed when choosing how to treat their child.

3. Fevers are scary, but for children over 3 months old, there is no magic number where a fever becomes dangerous. However, accompanying symptoms like lethargy, rash, or inconsolable crying are cause for concern.

4. Scheduling is not an exact science.
No one likes to camp out in the waiting room, but, once in a while, a patient requires a little extra care, and this can throw the schedule off for the day. However, one day that patient may be your child, and you’ll want that schedule-ruining extra care as well.

Critical Bike Safety Rules For Dickinson County Parents

Wednesday, August 7th, 2013

Dickinson County Kids Vitamins

Parents in the Iron Mountain, Iron County, and Menominee County area who want to encourage their children to be active and healthy have probably considered bike riding. This is a great option for kids, so today in the Iron Mountain Kid’s Health Blog we want to point out some basic principles of bicycle safety.

Don’t compromise on the helmet, parents!
No matter how short the excursion is, insist that your child wear a helmet each time they ride their bike. Helmets can be purchased at any bike store and at most big box stores in the 49801 area. And remember the power of example when it comes to children’s health (this means you need to wear your helmets too, mom and dad!).

Patience is important as your child develops biking skills. Don’t take off the training wheels until the child is ready and hold off on hand brakes until your child is an experienced rider. Remember that kids grow fast. Last year’s bike may now be too small.

Oversized bikes pose a safety risk. Take your child with you to your Iron Mountain or Iron County store when you purchase a bike so that you can make sure it is the proper size.

Active kids are healthy kids, and I want to do all I can to promote kids health in Dickinson County. My name is June Rittenhouse and I work from my Iron Mountain home business selling Variety Pak. If you would like to learn more, please give me a call at 906.542.3443 or visit me on the web at http://www.chocolate4thegoodlife.com.

4 Critical Playground Rules For Iron Mountain Kids

Friday, August 2nd, 2013

Nutrition for Iron Mountain children

The local playground is a good place for Dickinson County, Iron County, and Menominee County children to enjoy exercise and social interaction. However, there is potential for injury. Today in the Iron Mountain Kid’s Health Blog, we want to give you some helpful playground safety advice.

First, in the hot Michigan summer months parents should be sure to check any metal equipment such as slides before a child climbs on. The sun can quickly heat metal to the point that it can burn skin. Also, never allow children to play on the playground without wearing shoes.

Next, parents should pay special attention to the moving parts at their Iron Mountain play area. These areas should be out of reach for children, but parents should always double-check to make sure that kids can’t reach these danger zones.

Third, don’t allow children to attach other items, such as jump ropes or leashes, onto the playground equipment.

Lastly, many families choose to ride bikes to the park. This can be the perfect way to get exercise and avoid childhood obesity in Menominee County. Just make sure children remove their helmets as well as anything else that is around their necks (like hoodies with drawstrings).

My name is June Rittenhouse and I want to help Iron Mountain families raise healthy, happy kids. Issues such as proper nutrition and kid’s immunization schedules are often on my mind. I am the proud owner of my own Iron Mountain area home business that sells Variety Pak.
